CHECK YOUR SUMP PUMP

When flooding in your basement occurs it is absolutely too late to check the systems and make sure that they are all go!  It is a wise decision to go into your basement and check the connections to your outlets and sump pumps, as well as running water through it by means of a hose to make sure that it is working properly.

Sump pumps are used where basement flooding happens regularly and to remedy dampness where the water table is above the foundation of a home. Sump pumps send water away from a house to any place where it is no longer problematic, such as a municipal storm drain or a dry well.

If you are a novice at this type of thing it is good to have a friendly and helpful plumber on call to assist with the necessary quality check steps.  Some of the best types of submersible sump pumps can fail.  If the water flow into your basement is uncontrolled and flowing at a rate faster than the sump pump can keep up, then essentially flooding can still occur.  Some have opted to have a back up pump at the ready or even installed should such a circumstance present itself.

In the management of water flow, sometimes circumstances on the outside of your home can dictate just how successful you will be in moving water from the inside of your home.

For instance, when the sump pump is working where is it sending the water?  Is it going to a dry well or is it going to a municipal storm drain?  In either case, if the water is being moved away from the home into one of these areas, that area also must be free to handle the load.  Generally, this is where heavy flooding occurs for many homes, when the load of water has inundated the municipal drain or the dry well.  It is sure to be a disaster in the making when the water has no where to go but back into your home, into the empty space of your basement, thereby causing flood damage.

So, if possible, know ahead of time how you will handle such matters should your basement need flood restoration services.

Flooding in Chicagoland 773-885-8528

This year record rain falls have caused extensive flooding in the Chicago area and suburbs and the year is still young.  It is quite unfortunate that those who just got over flooding issues and getting the house or structure back to normal, only to have to deal with another blow of heavy rains and subsequent flood cleanup, flood damage or water damage problems.  As the old saying goes when it rains it pours and certainly Chicago has had its share of downpours this year.

How do you handle the onslaught?  Calmly, of course.  One thing's for sure, when you undergo flooding or water damage at one point or another, it gives you an inner fortitude the next time to deal with the disaster.  No one enjoys having their furniture floating in a basement, afraid to go down there because of electrical outlets or wiring being exposed to excess water, equipment or machinery inundated with water and possibly not reusable, porous materials swelling and busting because of too much moisture or humidity.  It certainly is a daunting thought to say the least.

Have your game face on!  Have your plan of action ready.  Know the dimensions of your basement, specifically the size or square footage.  Determine your plan before moving forward.  Have some sort of sequential order of things in place before this happens.  Do you know where your insurance papers are if you have insurance?  Did this happen before?  Did you keep the professional restoration companies' information handy for times like this?  Have you set aside a budget for just when this type of thing happens?  Have you a camera or photo taking gadget to get pictures?

When standing water invades your space you need to act fast.  If all the modules are in place it makes it just that much easier to act and act fast!  In terms of estimates, when flooding occurs it is extremely difficult for restoration companies to give out estimates, especially over the phone, and without seeing the damage.  So, keep in mind that when the phone rings off the hook and everyone's basement is flooded out, time is of the essence.  Precious minutes mean the difference between saving your possessions or losing them.

Food for thought.

Flood Water Damage Chicago

Today flooding is an all too common thing.  This certainly means that flood restoration necessity is on the increase.  We don't expect that it will ever happen to us.  Statistics show that no property is deemed too safe for flooding.  Even in high level areas flooding can take place from run off, or inundation of water at a very fast pace.  There are steps that we can take to be ready if and when it does.  There seems to be no obvious fool-proof way of stopping water when it is on the march.  We have dealt with a number of customers who said that they had special instruments, special devices, special electronic monitoring systems installed to their property and the flooding still happened.  That is because water is too unpredictable.  The best plan is to have access to emergency flood restoration companies or water extraction contractors, so that when the flood does strike, you can have professional flood restoration help there immediately.  When you contact the flood damage specialist, make sure that you mention if you own the property or not, whether you have insurance or not, is there standing water or has it receded, did you need to call a local plumber, does the facility have electricity or has that been disabled for some reason or another.

Firstly, the concern is to stop the influx of water.  Secondly, the concern is to get the floodwater out of the basement as quickly as possible.  Although, many will say that you don't have to remove baseboards or walls when flooding occurs, that could be the farthest thing from the truth.  Water can sit behind walls and other cavities and fester over time, causing mildew and eventually mold issues.  It doesn't take long for this to happen.  In a matter of at least three days, this process could start to develop and spread rapidly.  When flood restoration from flood damage is needed, get in touch with your local flood cleanup or flood restoration provider and get your place back to normal living conditions.
