When heavy rains hit and sump pumps in the basement fail, the company that gets there first usually secures the job. Being on call 24 hours a day is a good thing. If a sewer backs up, sump pump fails, toilet overflows, pipe bursts, or foundation in the basement cracks, it is good to have a local water damage company that knows how to dry out the structure immediately.
Having I.I.C.R.C. trained professionals who are certified in water damage restoration and structural drying is not only a plus but a necessity. Cleanup efforts should be begin as soon as possible. There are many write-ups on what to do when your place has flooded. One such publication is Repairing Your Flooded Home, there is good advice, lessons from other damaged properties like Katrina.
Never hurry to get your family back into the home. There must be a thorough cleaning and a complete drying so that the place can be habitable again. Doors may buckle, wood can swell, plaster ceilings and walls may be heavy with water, and floorboards may be loose, joists weakened. There may be holes and exposed nails and screws. Post disaster carbon monoxide poisoning is an ever present issue, such as gasoline power washers in basements. Experts recommend not pumping out a flooded basement until most of the water is gone. Otherwise, walls that collapse could result.
The odor associated with flooding can be quite overwhelming, and can pose a problem for those with respiratory issues. Always get rid of heavily soaked carpeting and padding alike. These become extremely hazardous when inundated with category 2 or 3 water from flooding. Baseboards should be removed to ventilate the wall cavities. Also, the insulation might have to be removed and replaced.
Cleaning up after a flood takes time, expertise and great effort. It should be done systematically by a trained professional, as if this is not done properly there could be devastatingly lasting effects that could run into the thousands in costs. Get it done by a professional and get it done right!

Fire and Flood Restoration Relax, Count from One to Ten

Listed here are some things that you the consumer would want to consider when it comes to your fire, flood, water or damage recovery project.

First, do assess the damage and see what if anything can be salvaged and what can be trashed.  This includes taking pictures of everything.
Second, make sure to get in touch with your insurance adjuster if you have one immediately.  If so, find out if your fire and flood damage is even covered.  Many insurance companies have various riders and fine prints that could be easily overlooked.
Third, formulate a plan of action for you and your family.  Where will you stay?  How will you store things salvaged?  Have you called family, friends?
Fourth, find a good fire and flood restoration and/or mold or damage remediation company if your adjuster has not recommended one for you.  You might even decide to go with another company if you do not feel comfortable with the company recommended.  Check your insurance for policies and procedures.
Fifth, in your search for a restoration cleaning service provider, note their demeanor.  Are they pleasant?  Do they seem to understand your particular need?  Are you being treated like a number?  What does your gut tell you?
Sixth, once decided upon get a quote for your services.  Sometimes its good to get two or three quotes, sometimes the sense of urgency calls for the first guy who arrives.
Seventh, note the fire and flood contractor's credentials if any.  He represents the company you are considering to have in your home for a very important project.  Make sure you feel comfortable with this individual.
Eighth, get as much documentation and pictures that you can throughout the process, and your fire and flood damage specialist should be doing the same.  If he is not, you might not have the right representative in your corner.
Ninth, find out your guarantees, warranties, and any other pertinent information.  Your adjuster if you have one can assist with this step by step process.  Get things in writing.
Tenth, get down to business and get the project underway as soon as humanly possible.  Because waiting and being indecisive can only make matters worse for you, your family and your structure's integrity.  Get the job done immediately if possible.  The goal is to save your investment.  Think smart and follow your instincts, oh and don't forget to take a deep breath and count from one to ten.
